How to get your business on Google Maps

When someone searches for “hair salon near me”, Google first shows a map with three businesses. Being one of those three is free, but it has to be done right.

1. Create or claim your listing

Go to Google Business Profile with a Google account and search for your business name. If it already exists, claim it; if not, create it. Google will ask you to prove the business is yours, usually with a short video of your premises or a code.

2. Choose the right category

This is the most important step. Pick the most precise main category you can (“Barber shop” rather than “Hair salon” if you are a barber) and add secondary categories if needed.

3. Fill in everything

  • Exact address (or service area if you travel to customers).
  • Real opening hours, including public holidays.
  • Phone number and a link to your website.
  • A clear description of what you do, with your town.
  • Good photos: shop front, interior, products and work.

4. Get reviews

Reviews are key to ranking higher. Ask happy customers to leave a review and always reply, politely, even to negative ones. Never buy fake reviews: Google detects them and can penalise you.

5. Connect your listing to your website

Google trusts businesses more when they have a clear website showing the same address, phone number and opening hours as the listing. That is why, for every website we build, we also set up the Google Maps listing.
